Erdogan: The UN conference is an opportunity to make good relations with Russia
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that the United Nations conference on climate change that begins next week in Paris can be a chance to make good relations with Moscow, after breaking from Turkey a Russian fighter plane close on the border with Syria.
Erdogan has said that Turkey would not apologize for the shooting down of the plane, which resulted in the death of one of the two pilots. Because of this, the Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to meet with Erdogan [to talk] about the incident.
But Moscow announced retaliatory economic measures against Turkey and has brought a measure of visas for Turkish citizens traveling to Russia.
"Our recent events pity really," Erdogan said in a televised speech from the city Baliksechir western Turkey. He avoided, however, apologize, as required by Russia.
Erdogan has said that Turkey deserves an apology because the airspace was violated by a Russian plane.
"On Monday in Paris will be an international climate conference, this may be an opportunity to rectify our relations with Russia. The confrontation will not bring happiness to anyone. As important is Russia for Turkey, the importance of Turkey for Russia, "said Erdogan.
