In an emergency situation, the press in Turkey


The state of journalism in Turkey, as well as ways of organizing emergency conditions, intervention and solidarity to the persecution suffered by the freedom of expression, journalists discussed by NA Europe and the Balkans, in their meeting in Istanbul.

The meeting was attended by the Vice President of the Federation, curator of the Panhellenic Federation of Journalists' Unions, Nelly Katsama and journalists from Turkey, Belgium, Cyprus, Montenegro, Ukraine, FYROM, Kosovo, Azerbaijan and Albania .

After completion of the work issued a joint communiqué issued indicating:

"The country suffered a terrible attack on the democratic institutions, the evening of July 15, 2016, when parts of the army tried to conquer the country through violence. Over 200 people were killed, parliament was bombed, the media received raid and journalists were forced to read statements at gunpoint. Through this action, the journalists unconditionally condemn.

However, on 15 July, the country experienced an unprecedented attack on the independent media as the government sought to suppress opposing voices, by stating that the dissident journalists are considered as potential coup or sympathizers to the terrorist. In the coming months: 176 media were closed.

More than 3,000 journalists have been violently put out of work without compensation.

Over 120 journalists are currently imprisoned and more than 100 after the failed coup. Furthermore the same time, 183 reportedly retained and then released.

Hundreds have been persecuted, and live in fear of being arrested.

Over 800 press cards were canceled and 32 journalistic identities for Parliament.

Many journalists have been forced to leave the country and at least 50 saw them their passports removed, including family members tous.Merikoi of the arrested journalists have no access to legal support and lawyers offering their services are also in prosecution system.

Foreign correspondents also regularly harassed or subjected to arbitrary detention or have been denied entry or expelled from the country. Those who try to dimosiografisoun the borders of Syria and south-east of the country are particularly targeted.

The public is hungry for independent journalism, and the right to access information is violated, the systematic prohibition of journalists to report on certain events.

These elements are changing on an almost daily basis and are subject to continuous review in the breadth and depth of the attack on the media.

We thank the staff of Cumhurriyet newspaper and wives of the arrested journalists for the reception of participants in the meeting in their offices after the raid suffered in October, and the imprisonment of 10 of the most senior members of staff, including journalists, employees of other specializations and lawyers.

Journalists and the unions that represent the region, we stand in solidarity with all our colleagues in Turkey, praising their courage, their strength and their readiness to be raised for their principles.

Their struggle is our struggle.

We, the representatives of Member Associations IFJ-ESA from across the region we give a promise to make campaign for you.
Insisting that the state of emergency should not be used to murdered independent journalism.

Demanding the immediate release of all journalists and support of the submissions for the release of Turkish journalists, support the TGS in the organization and help journalists in the country.

We will assist in organizing solidarity campaigns or organize visits for them among our members.

We will inform our members and the public opinion on the crisis of the media in Turkey.

We will roll up these cases with the governments of our countries, and intergovernmental organizations, including the European Union, Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
