O fierce hurricane Matthew, now sweeping southwestern Haiti accompanied by stormy winds to 230 kilometers per hour, has already killed at least two people and flooding as a result thousands of people were forced to leave the affected areas.
Matthew, who is the strongest hurricane in the region for 10 years, threatening also Cuba, struck Haiti near Les Anglia community today at 07.00 local time (14.00 GMT), said the US Hurricane Tracking Center (NHC) the release issued at 15:00 GMT.
'Extremely dangerous' according to American meteorologists, Matthew may have variations in the strength of the next two days but will remain "strong until at least Wednesday night," raising fears about cause serious damage in a country where the available resources are minimal unlike poverty.
Thousands of people evacuated from the area and the authorities are concerned about widespread destruction.
The country already counts its first victims of extreme weather events. A man was killed in the sinking of the boat rode the Praskefi, while a second is ignored, according to local authorities.
A sick woman died yesterday evening in Port Salout (south) and failed to get out of the house to the first aid provided, because of the floods.
Matthew expected to cause heavy rainfall where the water level will rise between 38 and 63 cm in southern Haiti and the waves will reach 1 meter, according to the NHC. Rain will also affect the north-west and eastern Cuba with water 20-30 cm and in some cases 50 cm.
"Great rising waters and landslides that could cost lives, is possible because of the rainfall in southern and northwestern Haiti, southwestern Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba 'warn meteorologists.
Removed children prisoners.
Civil protection authorities indicated that 130 children were removed on buses and taken to a school in the capital, from an orphanage in Cite Soleil region, the largest slum in Haiti.
At the same time the authorities evacuated 1,000 prisoners from at least four prisons to safer locations expected to escape the brunt of the hurricane.
